Transparent math

How the totals are calculated.

The formulas are intentionally simple and visible. Use this page to check an answer, understand an assumption, or reproduce a result.

General rules

Everyday Totals uses only the values you enter. It does not pull balances, transactions, current fuel prices, utility rates, or financial-market data from outside services. A blank or invalid value is treated as zero or rejected by the form, depending on the field. Negative expenses are not accepted. Results are rounded for display, while calculations use the more precise values available in the browser.

Monthly figures generally use 12 months per year. Weekly figures use 52 weeks per year. A calculated month is one-twelfth of the calculated annual amount rather than exactly four weeks; this avoids understating a year as 48 weeks.

Subscription cost calculator

Annual subscription cost
(monthly charges × 12) + annual charges

The five-year view multiplies the annual result by five. It does not predict price increases, taxes, introductory pricing, foreign-exchange changes, late fees, or interest. “Potential savings” multiplies the monthly amount you identify as removable by 12. It is a scenario, not a record that anything was actually canceled or saved.

Example

If monthly subscriptions total $65 and annual subscriptions total $120, the estimate is ($65 × 12) + $120 = $900 per year. If $20 per month could be canceled, the hypothetical annual reduction is $240.

Commute cost calculator

Annual commute miles
one-way miles × 2 × commute days per week × commute weeks per year
Annual fuel cost
(annual miles ÷ miles per gallon) × price per gallon

Annual parking and tolls equal the daily extra cost multiplied by commute days and the weeks entered. An optional wear allowance per mile is multiplied by annual commute miles. The final annual estimate adds fuel, daily extras, and that chosen per-mile allowance; the monthly display divides the result by 12.

The comparison subtracts the entered remote days from weekly commute days without going below zero. Vacation, holidays beyond the weeks entered, traffic, idling, seasonal fuel economy, insurance, financing, and the value of travel time are not automatically included.

Appliance electricity calculator

Annual energy use
(watts ÷ 1,000) × hours per day × days per week × 52 × number of appliances
Annual electricity cost
annual kilowatt-hours × electricity price per kilowatt-hour

The formula assumes the device draws the entered wattage whenever it is used. Real devices may cycle on and off, change power levels, or draw standby power. A label’s rated wattage can represent a maximum rather than typical use. Utility bills may include tiered rates, time-of-use pricing, taxes, demand charges, and fixed service fees; the calculator uses one flat energy rate and does not allocate fixed fees to a device.

Savings-goal calculator

Amount remaining
goal amount − amount already saved
Months to goal
amount remaining ÷ planned monthly contribution, rounded up

The displayed target month advances the current date by the number of whole months required. The estimate does not include interest, investment returns, taxes, inflation, withdrawals, fees, or irregular contributions. If the amount already saved meets the goal, the result is zero months. If the monthly contribution is zero, a completion date cannot be estimated.

Daily savings game

The game presents a fixed set of hypothetical choices for the local calendar date. Each answer has a scenario value and a tradeoff score. “Potential savings” is the sum of the hypothetical amounts attached to the choices selected. It is not individualized, it does not represent money deposited, and the choices may not apply to a player’s actual life. The balance score rewards answers that consider convenience, time, safety, reliability, and recurring cost—not simply the cheapest option.

Cost in work hours

Estimated take-home hourly rate
take-home pay for the selected period ÷ estimated work hours in that period
Work-time equivalent
annualized cost ÷ estimated take-home hourly rate

Weekly costs use 52 occurrences and monthly costs use 12. A one-time price is not annualized. The tool does not add commuting time, unpaid work, benefits, taxes already withheld, or the different personal value of free time. It is a perspective tool, not a wage or tax calculation.

Annual expense calendar and household worksheet

Monthly reserve target
total listed irregular expenses ÷ 12

The calendar groups entered bills by due month while the reserve is a simple yearly average. That average can be too low when an expense is due before a full year of saving. Saved entries remain in local browser storage on the visitor's device and can be removed with the tool's clear controls.

Statement Detective

Every merchant, transaction, amount, and person in Statement Detective is fictional. Points reward identifying the clues specified in each case and avoiding unsupported accusations. The game teaches a verification sequence; it cannot determine whether a real transaction is valid or fraudulent.

Limits and responsible use

These tools provide educational estimates, not financial, tax, legal, accounting, energy-audit, or transportation advice. They cannot confirm a bill, predict future prices, evaluate contract terms, or determine whether a decision is appropriate for you. Verify important numbers with statements, provider terms, a utility meter, or a qualified professional.

If a result appears incorrect, send the page name, the inputs used, the device and browser, and the expected result through the contact page. Do not include account numbers or other sensitive information.
